Behind the Scenes in BEC Toolroom: Apprenticeship
Our busy toolroom at BEC Group continues to expand as our orders grow. Our newest addition to the tooling department, Tom is an apprentice machining technician. We caught up with Tom in the toolroom to ask him a few questions about his apprenticeship so far. Why did you decide on a machining apprenticeship? I really wanted an apprenticeship in a hands-on trade. I was considering different types of engineering apprenticeships when my parents recommended toolmaking as an option. I looked into a few of the courses available and the Level 3 Machining Technician Course with Seta looked like just what I wanted. How did you find your training with Seta? I’ve just finished my initial six months of training at the Seta facility in Southampton. During the training we were given an overview of machining, including rotations in learning about … Continue reading

From Conceptualisation to Manufacturing: It All Starts with Great Design
In plastic component manufacturing, the journey from an initial idea to a tangible product hinges on the design process. We take the plastic parts that create everyday items in houses, cars, factories and workplaces for granted, but building them is a multi-stage process that requires experience and cutting-edge technology. This article investigates the plastic injection moulding manufacturing process, from design to production. It Begins With Tool Design Tool design is more than just crafting a mould – it’s about envisioning the end product and reverse-engineering the process to achieve it. BEC Group’s team of in-house experts leverages state-of-the-art Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software to create production-ready mould tools directly from 3D CAD models. This approach Allows our team to identify any potential issues in a design before production begins. It is easily edited and incredibly accurate. The Design for Manufacture Process … Continue reading

Precision Engineering: The Inner Workings of Injection Mould Tooling
Injection mould tooling shapes how we mass-produce plastic parts. It combines technical expertise with cutting-edge technology to create detailed and complex moulds for injection moulding. These moulds are then used to produce high volumes of plastic components with precision. High-quality, identical parts that are produced quickly and at a low cost per part. What is Injection Moulding? Injection moulding is a manufacturing process used to create parts by injecting molten plastic. into a mould. From automotive components to consumer electronics, injection moulding facilitates the production of a vast range of items we use daily. It’s particularly suited for producing large quantities of the same item and is predominantly used with plastics. Mould tooling is essentially the process of creating the original metal mould for injection moulding. It’s the reservoir that is filled with molten plastic and then shaped under immense … Continue reading
