You may have noticed a recent addition to our machinery inventory?  Much to our excitement and Mike’s in particular (!), we’ve just taken delivery of the RLX1630 Proturn Lathe, which travelled up from XYZ Machine Tools, in Tiverton, Devon last week.

Currently being calibrated, so it’s fully operational to meet customer demand, I managed to catch Mike, Tooling Manager, between jobs to find out why it’s so important BEC invest in new machinery now?

“Given the challenging manufacturing conditions, particularly the latest issues with coronavirus, BEC can’t afford to stand still, we must constantly adapt. Investing in the Proturn lathe is integral to our programme of continually improving the efficiency of an already great service we offer customers.”

XYZ Skull tool

Look at what it can produce too!  This fabulous steel skull, perfect for any front room!!   Seriously though, with an increase in demand for UK-based injection mould tooling services and a focus on local manufacturing, the time was right to invest in this state-of-the-art CNC lathe machine.  Mike added “it means we can meet both an increase in demand for mould tooling and achieve tighter deadlines demanded by our customers.  Until now we have had the manual lathe but the Proturn combines automated and manual functionality, so we can offer customers even more speed and efficiency.”

The Proturn marks the latest in an ambitious but steady programme of investment by the company, following the purchase of two BOY injection moulding machines last year.  It’s always been important for BEC to embrace new and innovative technology, not only investing in machinery but also the latest in CAD design, evolving with the times to enhance our offering to customers and provide end to end moulding services from under one roof.  Mike added “tooling was where it all started, and this latest investment is an indicator of BEC’s investment in the next 41 years.”

We look forward to sharing with you some of our exciting new wins thanks to this stylish new recruit!
